For an overture, Niti Aayog is an extra-constitutional, non-statutory advisory body, set up by the government of India with an aim to evolve a shared vision encompassing all the aspects of India’s development i.e. in the social, economical, political, environmental, and individual spheres, and more importantly, working for the accomplishment of the same.

Non-Governmental Organization registration under Niti Aayog is a step in the attempt of incorporating all the volunteers working in the realization of the shared vision and building a better India. And for all those who want to make their contribution by setting up a non-governmental organization (NGO), or a voluntary organization (VO) e.g. community-based organizations, NGDOs, support organizations, etc., the Niti Aayog has been maintaining an NGO partnership system (PS) portal called ‘NGO Darpan’ for various registration related tasks.

By facilitating the enrollment process, Niti Aayog not only help the NGOs and VOs get an easy access to avail grants from the government, but they also get a place in the list of registered organizations in the government repository for legitimately functioning across India, in any of its states with any specific nature of work in support of art, culture, also academic, the socio-political, economic, technological and environmental aspect of people’s welfare.

What are the options available on Niti Aayog NGO DARPAN?

  • Niti Aayog NGO Darpan portal offers easy access to existing and currently functioning NGOs and VOs all over India.

  • Access to information on various schemes and grants offered in such schemes by Ministries, their departments, and other statutory and non-statutory government bodies.

  • Online application facility for various grants offered.

  • Status update on applications submitted for grants.

  • And, most commonly, for NGO enrollment and associated tasks in NGO-DARPAN, for official status in the form of a Unique ID.

Eligibility for NGO Registration

Fundamental Criteria

Non-governmental organizations or voluntary organizations that are registered as any of the following entities, specifically under the section 25 of the Indian Companies Act, 1956—are eligible for registration and consequently entitled to attain a unique ID.

  • Societies

  • Trusts

  • Pvt. Ltd. Non-Profit Companies

Following are the characteristics that an NGO should have in order to register and receive grants under Niti Aayog:
  • All the participating entities should be privately owned.

  • All the participating entities, adhering to essentially remain a non-profit company, must not transfer its accumulated funds (say, profits) to the owners.

  • All the participating entities must be self-managing/governing their affairs, and not the government.

  • All the participating entities, with their preset goals and objectives should be in advance registered as organizations.

How to enroll/register in Niti Aayog NGO Darpan?
  1. All the non-governmental organizations and voluntary organizations that were previously registered as societies, trusts, or private non-profit companies are welcome to register themselves by heading over to the Niti Aayog’s PS portal NGO Darpan facilitated by the National Informatics Centre, Ministry of Electronics & Information Technology (MeitY), Government of India.

  2. Upon hitting the "Login/Register" button, a form would pop up which applicants are required to fill.

  3. In the following steps, applicants in the course of filling the form would choose a Username/User ID and an alphanumeric password which is they would require upon their next log in. Applicants are requested to keep the credential safe for they would not be able to track their application otherwise.

  4. Once the form has been filled properly, applicants would need to click on the submit button and whereupon the application would be successfully submitted. For confirmation, some information might pop up on the screen. Also, the confirmation message would also constitute a Unique ID, which is requested to keep safe along with the Username & password. The Unique ID would be about 13 characters long separated by a forward slash(s).

  5. Upon the completion of the aforementioned steps, a system-generated email with an account activation/verification link would be sent to your registered email address. The applicants would be required to click the link to complete the registration.

  6. In the next step, the applicants would be asked to provide their Unique ID (Please refer to step ‘4’) for final verification.

  7. Applicants can now access their accounts and reap all the facilities including grants.

Mandatory Documents

  • The Registration Certificate of the nonprofit organization should be scanned and uploaded in PDF or JPEG formats (file extensions). The maximum file size shall not exceed 2 MegaBytes (MB).

  • The Permanent Account Number (PAN) generated for the organization, as well as of the chairpersons. For chairperson, the Aadhaar Card number is also mandatory.

How to File an application for availing grants offered by Niti Aayog?

Disclaimer: The Portal does not issue any grants for Non-governmental organizations, or voluntary organizations. It is only the diverse ministries, oftentimes departments and other government bodies that sanctions allocation of funds to Niti Aayog registered NGOs and VOs subject to various schemes and initiatives developed by them.

  • In order to apply for availing grants, the initial step is to create a user account. (Please refer to the section dedicated to “How to enroll/register in Niti Aayog NGO Darpan?”

  • All the enrolled users, after logging in to their accounts, can browse through the schemes and information on grants which are typically sorted by departments. The applicants may choose a scheme to which application for a grant needs to be directed. The page therein would constitute all the necessary details required to successfully submit an application seeking a grant under a specific scheme. The page shall also be composed of the information of the documents required to apply, as well as the names of the authorities concerned.
